The sill plate, usually a treated 2 by 8 board, rests flat on top of the foundation, and the ledger board, usually a 2 by 10 board, rests upright on top of the sill plate in an upright position. Rotted ledger boards or sill plates must be replaced to prevent structure failure.

My home can be a 1974 split degree. I sculpted off the siding and observed that the sill plate is rotten. The wall is usually framed on tóp of the base with doubled up 2x4s. The very first 2x4 closest to the base is usually rotten. From whát I can tell this part of the sill would have the insert from laminated light beam that runs down the middle of the house. There is certainly a place of 4 2x4s that bring this weight down to the basis. I had been was thinking what the greatest way to move about helping this fill while replacing thé rotten 2x4.
